Unit 3 Revision

The revisions that I have done above were to reconstruct the natural science article focused on the APA format and the structural genre norms. I added another citation that discussed a conference to emphasize the critical issue of a rare species that caused potential danger to society. I added minor fixes to have a stronger science article that I struggled to construct during the initial process of the unit project.  If I were to look at my other unit projects, I would just fix minor issues. The overall structure of my unit projects are done correctly, but there are a variety of things that could be added or removed to have more clarity within the project.

Unit 2: Humanities Review, Informal/Social Media Critcism, Academic Criticism

The 1988 film Akira directed by Katsuhiro Otomo and written by Otomo and Izo Hashimoto takes place in a rebuilt Tokyo called Neo-Toyko, Japan around 31 years after World War III in the year 2019. Prior to the current story setting, the government in Japan have been conducting a variety of experiments upon people in the 1960s called The Project with the intention of demonstrating how humans are capable of obtaining psychic abilities. One subject named Akira ended up losing control of his own power and caused an explosion that foeign nations mistaken it as a nuclear detonation, evolving into a third world war. The government in Neo-Tokyo proceeded to conduct more experiments on the remaining subjects, in hopes of finding more about the psychic abilities with advanced technology that people could one day obtain as well.

The dynamic of a utopian society where science and technology have advanced could result in

creating the destruction of mankind, as shown in Akira. The situation that transpired in the film has fortified this concern by showing how an individual named Tetsuo discovered his psychic abilities after experiencing a psychedelic trips in the hospital that was conducted by other peoplespecifically these green skin pigmented people called “Espers” who have psychic abilities to create realistic illusions. His discovery that the illusions were caused after an attack from an Esper leading him to share the same abilities and rapidly adjust to his own abilities to use it as a leverage for independence with a new sense of superiority. The feeling of being inferior is not a foreign expression to Tetsuo, since all his life he had his friend Kaneda helping him with good intentions such as the scene in the beginning of the film where he gets involved in a dispute with a member from another bike gang after seeing Tetsuo on the floor unable

to defend himself. Although Kaneda wanted to help a friend out, this only angered Tetsuo who refused any help, wanting to stand up for himself without depending on anyone and show signs of weakness. To suddenly gain abilties that other humans dont have and the government struggles to monitor over, the delusional fantasy of power would drive anyone to be reckless with their decisions without facing tough consequences.

The new power that Tetsuo discovered symbolized the damaging impacts of advanced science and technology could have to society, followed with the film continuing to show how Tetsuo loses touch with reality and falls into a mindset where he only seeks power and creates more destruction in Neo-Tokyo. He searches for a powerful Esper named Akira. While combating with Kaneda, Tetsuo’s own abilities has erupted that he was no longer able to handle it, resulting in his body to expand and injure others. Scientists have warned him about overusing his psychic abilities leading to damages beyond repair on his own body. This scene showed how creating a power that is still unable to be handled by the government should have been a warning sign that what they are experimenting could cause detrimental effects to society. The following scene his body then erupts and a mass explosion occurred. Flashbacks from Tetsuo’s past comes up as the Espers transcend him into another plane of existence. Tetsuo comes into full control of his powers as Akira transports his spirit into the universe, saying “I am Tetsuo”. The government was left with the failed experiments as the Espers and Tetsuo leave to create another universe. The government had set themselves up for failure for creating god-like power to a mortal human will only make them be selfish and ultimately destroy the universe, as what Tetsuo attempted to do.

Unit 1: News Articles

Heroes Vs. Villains: News Report

Throughout many centuries, there has been a long going separation between two worlds; the hero and villain societies. The two societies would often clash for world dominance, having the ability to maneuver society into following certain protocols and formalities aligning with their ideologies. While the Hero Public Safety Commission Organization (HPSCO) holds the responsibility for enforcing laws and managing the interactions between heroes and society to maintain peace, this fueled the underground society to seek vengeance and make attempts to gain dominance.

The recent attacks that occurred in Jaku City, Japan have caused chaos and destruction to break out have been linked to an organization called the Paranormal Liberal Front (PLF). The organization is being held accountable for planning an upcoming war against the Hero society that has been stopped before they began their devastating plan. Information was leaked to the  Hero Public Safety Commission Organization about there whereabouts of the PLF, resulting in the urgent calling for over 100 Heroes to raid the PLF base.

The clash between the two societies emerging soon as another battle breaks out has brought up concerns to society. Locals from nearby cities have expressed their fears for what the future will end up if this ongoing dispute continues.

“My son dreams of becoming a hero one day like the ones he sees on television, but if his path leads to a future filled with blood then I feel like staying here and just watching heroes’ work would have made him happier.” One civilian who asked to remain anonymous said.

The continuation of this long battle has been increasing the crime rates all across Japan and the insurance losses as more areas get destroyed. Studies from Japan’s Research Facility have analyzed many past battles heroes have faced with villains and have found a comparison between the majority of them starting due to the simple desire for ultimate power.  The Heroes Public Safety Commission plans to negotiate with the Paranormal Liberal Front after they surrender. There still isn’t a clear indication of whether or not peace will come between the different societies who struggle to see things eye-to-eye.

Heroes Vs. Villains: Psychological Analysis of Heroes

As the new generation takes the responsibility as to where society will be directed towards in 10-20 years, many pursue becoming heroes that they have admired. This journey has led to many heroes suffering from psychological trauma that developed during their childhood as they trained to where they are now, studies saying that over 2 million heroes and civilians are confirmed to be suffering from mental illness and/or trauma. Without the appropriate approaches, there would be a higher rate of heroes and civilians suffering from a form of psychological trauma, increasing up to 7 million by 2050.

To begin the path of becoming a certified hero, one has to pass a series of Darwinist trials when enrolling in a hero academy that offers Heroics education. The top #1 hero academy in Japan provides an entrance exam that allows students to demonstrate their skills as they enter mock battles in a fake urban setting. They have the goal of taking down robotic villains that will provide them with points, the higher the points the higher the chance of getting accepted to the academy. There is currently a 5% acceptance rate as many children apply to this academy in hopes of earning the best education. This pressure of succeeding under difficult circumstances has brought stress to adolescents as they begin to train to become a hero.

Many young heroes are introduced to the pressure of having so many lives in their hands and have the duty to protect society can be difficult for an individual to handle. Too much stress and/or trauma could result in mental health problems. (depression, anxiety, and personality disorders) To prevent any negative outcomes that could happen when an individual does not seek or receive help, psychotherapy is offered that studies have shown to improve their mental state.

As many are putting their lives on the line, they will be facing new situations and battles that will build up over them. The increase in stress and trauma will slowly deteriorate a human being, failing them from saving themselves and society. There has to be an increase in resources for psychotherapy or additional assistance provided to heroes and students that are training to become heroes before a new generation of heroes arrives who are already losing an internal battle with themselves that could affect their performance in their job.

Heroes Vs. Villains: How Heroes Have Failed Society

The society that we are currently living in has been created to ostracize those who are deemed unworthy of following along the broken system that the Hero Public Safety Commission Organization constructed. Heroes have allowed themselves to become the only source of justice that everyone has to rely on, depending on them that ultimately weakens them internally.

A culture of creating a class has made justice become a monopoly. From the division of societies, the title was given to “Heroes” and “Villains” has been used for the sole purpose of giving society a fixated perspective, automatically assuming that heroes are good trustworthy people while villains are corrupted and should remain at the bottom of society. It has allowed society to become restrictive.

Villains are made to be an outcast and feel alienated from a society that doesn’t match with them. Their true existence was to be participants of allowing the hero society to build upon its commodification. What would a hero society be if there were no villains to cause mayhem? Villains were constructed by targeting specific civilians and failing them so they can yearn for revenge. The world has shamed and pushed away those who needed assistance for a situation that they were going through while portraying themselves to be heroic figures who have never done anything wrong. There are villains who have dedicated their time to express their frustrations with this society and there have been heroes that are corrupted.

The current battle in Jaku City is the breaking point that villains are having about being on the bottom of this unbalanced society. It’s time for the public to realize how the heroes they idolized so much have set them up for failure. Relying on them too much has given them the acceptance that they are weak, not realizing that we are all the same regardless of whatever occupation we have. This social pyramid will come down as heroes fall to the bottom, allowing villains to climb to the top and lead society to a better future that won’t leave anyone pushed to the corner.
